Malay Wedding Customs & Inspiration

Hello!!

Ok. Lets talk about wedding. Why I love going to weddings? One word is enough to describe. FOODS! Haha. Well, everything is awesome. Wedding reception is a celebration. A time to meet some old and new friends, celebrate with family and wish the bridals well on their new adventurers together.

Lets us see the stages prior to a Malay wedding :

Stage 1 : Merisik

The merisik is the ‘seeking ceremony’ or ‘spying custom’. During this stage, one or more wakil (representatives) from the man’s family will pay a visit to the woman’s family. The merisik is not considered a formal proposal.

Stage 2 : Bertunang (Engagement)

When a marriage plan is being agreed by both parties, an engagement date will be set. The engagement custom is usually held at the bride’s home. The bertunang is being done as a symbol that the future groom and bride have already been reserved.

Stage 3 : Akad Nikah

Akad nikah is usually conducted at a mosque. The groom will sign the marriage contract and provide his bride with a mas kahwin (some kind of a payment in the form of money, gold or any other thing as requested).

Stage 4 : Bersanding

Bersanding is the actual wedding day. It can be celebrated in a traditional way or modern way.

Another thing about Malay wedding is the Ang-pow. Ang-pow is the money given by the guests. Basically, there is no specific amount of money/rates for Malay wedding. You can give as low as RM10. But don't be surprised if you get RM1 or even an empty ang-pow. It happens all the time.

Next, I want to share some of the Pelamin (bridal bed) pictures. Just to give ideas to people out there who are getting married! Hehe. The concept? Traditional? Vintage? Elegant? Grand? Just name it!

1. Traditional

It brings back the memory of old Malay culture. You can see traditional stuffs such as the chairs, the tepak sireh (at the centre) and bunga telur (two stands at the end of the bridal bed)

2. Vintage

Some sort of garden-vintage concept, with white colour and picture frames as the main attraction.

3. Elegant

A nice combination of colours and a good lighting plan make it simply elegant!

4. Grand

A truly gorgeously grand wedding in the most spectacular setting.

5. Garden concept

I'm not sure whether the picture above is categorized as garden concept or not. Hehe.

Wedding time is normally considered a time of grand celebration, expenses and people. It is undeniably a couple’s personal decision either to have a grand celebration or a simple party with family and close friends. Your bonding, rituals and feelings are going to be the same with or without countless people. Create a budget that will keep you within your means.
